Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations is a high-voltage musical that follows the remarkable journey of The Temptations, from the gritty streets of Detroit to their well-deserved spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. With their iconic dance moves and unmistakable harmonies, they dominated the charts, racking up an astonishing 42 Top Ten Hits, with 14 of them claiming the number one spot.
But the story goes deeper – it’s about how these talented individuals came together, reached new heights, and faced both personal and political turmoil during a time of national unrest in the United States. This exhilarating tale explores themes of brotherhood, family, loyalty, and betrayal, all set to the infectious rhythm of The Temptations’ beloved classics, including “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” “Get Ready,” “Papa Was a Rolling Stone,” and many more.
The dazzling jukebox musical opened on Broadway March 21, 2019. It went on to receive 12 Tony Awards nominations including Best Musical, Best Book for Dominique Morisseau, and Best Director for Des McAnuff. Sergio Trujillo won Best Choreography. The musical also features a Grammy Award-winning score by The Temptations. It’s an experience that will give you Grammy-winning songs and Tony-winning moves!
The production features sets by Robert Bill, costumes by Paul Tazewell, lighting by Howell Binkley, sound design by Steve Canyon, projections by Peter Nigrini, hair and wig design by Charles G. LaPointe, fight direction by Steve Rankin, orchestrations by Harold Wheeler, music coordination by John Miller, music direction by Kenny Seymour, and vocal supervision by Liz Caplan with Edgar Godineaux as associate choreographer. In 2021, EGOT winner John Legend officially joined the Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations Producting team. He shared, “Performing with this incredible cast is a memory I’ll always cherish,” said the “Ordinary People” singer. “The Temptations’ music is core to my own musical upbringing and is an integral part of America’s cultural heartbeat. This is a musical I love and a story I want to help share. In this pivotal time, it’s so important that we support and maintain Broadway, an essential part of the soul of New York and the entire nation.”
The production’s touring cast are as follows: Jalen Harris as Eddie Kendricks; Harrell Holmes Jr. as Melvin Franklin; E. Clayton Cornelious as Paul Williams; Michael Andreaus as Otis Williams; Elijah Ahmad Lewis as David Ruffin. They will be joined by supporting actors Brian C. Binion, Reggie Bromell, Felander, Shayla Brielle G., Ryan M. Hunt, Jeremy R. Kelsey, AJ Lockhart, Omar Madden, Dwayne P. Mitchell, Devin Price, Brittny Smith, Amber Mariah Talley, Nazarria Workman and Andrew Volzer.
The original Broadway cast recording of Ain’t Too Proud was recorded January 19–22, 2019 at Sound on Sound Studios, Montclair, NJ. It was followed by a digital release on March 22, 2019. The physical album released on April 19, and a double-LP vinyl was released on June 7. There are a totak of 32 nostalgic songs by The Tempations on this production and fans of the musical group will definitely have a good time.
