This fall, Hamilton will be playing in Academy Of Music, the highly praised theatre of Philadelphia as well as the best possible entertainment venue for the global phenomenon Musical. The critically acclaimed and award-winning show continues to tell its smashing tale from place to place all over the world.
Making its start off Broadway in 2015, Hamilton was not instantly the Broadway success that you will see today. Lin-Manuel Miranda has spoken candidly about its inspiration, starting as a concept album in 2009, with Miranda saying that he was “thrilled that the White House called me tonight, because I’m actually working on a hip-hop album. It's a concept album about the life of someone I think embodies hip-hop: treasury secretary Alexander Hamilton.” That one single performance elicited praise and a well-earned standing ovation from his crowd at the time, as well as former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, and directly led to Miranda’s creation of the Hamilton musical we see now.
Because of his history in musical theater, Lin-Manuel Miranda has also drawn influences from other popular theater pieces such as Les Misérables, which holds to a similar theme that tells the story of a struggle, and succeeding from that struggle, as opposed to the traditional musical theatre biases that follow the trend of being very uplifting and happy. Similarly Hamilton, being about the struggle of an orphaned immigrant from the Caribbean who climbed the ladder and became the first American Treasury Secretary. With the greatest respect to its source material, the production shows us both sides of Alexander Hamilton’s rise to power, by not only offering us a peek into his personal life and struggle, but also his influence and lasting legacy in being able to greatly shape the Nation over that time.
By telling this story, Hamilton continues to present its relevance in our modern culture and even international public discourse, confronting questions and topics that are deeply relevant not only to America, but also around the world. Even the use of musical genres like hip hop, jazz, and R&B as the shows score has solidified its place in modern culture, making it one of the most popular hit Philadelphia musicals today.
