Les Miserables at Academy of Music

Set mainly in the time span preceding and during the widespread rebellion in 1832 in France, Les Misérables is the tale of Jean Valjean, a citizen of Paris who was sentenced for close to 20 years because of a small act of theft for his nephew. Despite nearing the end of his sentence, he runs away and searches for a second chance to live his life; Jean Valjean then uses a new persona as Monsieur Madeleine, while still hiding from the law and Javert, an officer with a rigid belief in the law and intent on capturing and bringing Valjean face the consequences of his previous escape.

Taking place over a span of approximately two decades consisting of the musical's entire production, Valjean happens to be involved through fated encounters with numerous main figures throughout Les Mis – Fantine is one of Jean Valjean's factory employees who gives birth to an illegitimate baby; Cosette is the foster child of Monsieur Madeleine, who by no surprise Fantine’s baby; Marius, a student on the side of the rebellion and the love interest of Cosette. Other characters shown in the musical include the Thénardiers, immoral proprietors who think only of themselves and are obsessed with taking advantage of the chaos; Eponine, their child, who harbors a secret love for for Marius; and supporters of the rebellion specifically Gavroche, a small but cunning street urchin, and the rebellion’s fearless leader, Enjolras.

This diverse cast of characters entangled by serendipity and their unique stories are presented beautifully on stage, not just with its 1800s French-based clothing and set creations, but principally with Les Mis being sung-through fully from start to finish. With famous numbers including “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as highlights of its amazing musical score, the musical is able to portray the underlying motives beneath each and every character that plays out beautifully on stage.
