Les Miserables at Academy of Music

Set mainly during the time span preceding and during the 1832 French rebellion in Paris, France, Les Misérables is the tale of Jean Valjean, a local of Paris, France who was sentenced for almost two decades as a consequence of a small act of theft for his nephew. After his release on parole, he escapes and searches for redemption as an honest man; Valjean then takes on a new name as Monsieur Madeleine, while still constantly being pursued by his nemesis, Javert, an officer loyal to the letter of the law and intent on capturing and bringing Valjean to justice.

Taking place over a period of almost two decades across its two acts, Jean Valjean is entangled in one way or another with several key people throughout Les Mis – Fantine is one of Monsieur Madeleine’s factory workers who mothers an illegitimate baby; Cosette is the adoptive baby of Monsieur Madeleine, who turns out to be Fantine’s infant; Marius, a student fighting for the rebellion and the love interest of Cosette. Other roles featured in the play consist of the Thénardiers, greedy proprietors who pay no heed to their daughter and are obsessed with their own personal gain; Eponine, their daughter, who hides her true feelings for Marius; and comrades of the rebellion specifically Gavroche, a small but talented street urchin, and the rebellion’s fearless leader, Enjolras.

This motley group of characters entangled by serendipity and their individual stories are adapted skillfully on a live platform, not just with the musical's 1800s French-based costume and stage design, but distinctly with Les Mis being sung-through fully from beginning to end. With hit numbers like “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as part of its astounding musical score, the musical is able to communicate the real and unmasked personalities hidden deep in every character that plays out beautifully in each performance.
