The Anonymous Lover was written in 1780 by Joseph Bologne. He became known during the Classical era (roughly spanning from 1750 to 1820), but his identity as a biracial Black man gave him the title of “Black Mozart.” The Anonymous Lover is his only surviving opera, but the fact that it has passed down over two centuries makes it a testament to his skill and accomplishments.
This romantic comedy is filled with beautiful arias, winning characters, and charming music. The opera follows young widow Léontine (soprano Symone Harcum). Unexpectedly, the woman receives love letters from someone anonymous. She has an internal struggle, deciding whether or not she will allow herself to love again, especially when it becomes apparent her friend Valcour is the secret admirer.
"This comic opera is a rather lighthearted affair, consistent with the tastes of the times, concerning a love triangle, but one with a twist." - The Hudson Review
The show features: music by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges; libretto by François-Georges Fouques Deshayes, Desfontaines; based on the play L’amant anonyme by Stéphanie Félicité, Madame de Genlis; and adapted by Kirsten Greenidge
By arrangement with Opera Ritrovata in conjunction with the publishers and copyright owners, engravers and editors: George N. Gianopoulos, Stephen Karr, Leila Núñez-Fredell, and Mishkar Núñez-Fredell
The opera is performed in French with English subtitles. It will run for roughly 90 minutes.
